What are some needs of Gaitway Therapy?
* Equipment for the horses: halters, grooming, dewormer, grain, hay.
* Volunteers to lead or sidewalk during therapy
* Groups or individuals who will support the program with fund-raisers that help defray operational costs.
What are the requirements to volunteer during therapy?
The minimum age for a horse-handler or leader during therapy is 16 years old and they must have a strong background in horsemanship, riding skills, safety and risk management around horses. Sidewalkers are typically adults or older teenagers who have an interest in assisting during therapy but are not qualified to lead the horses. Sidewalkers and leaders should be in good physical condition because we walk alongside the horse for an average of 20 minutes per session. Other persons who volunteer can help with scheduling and maintain safety around the barn and horses. Or even come on an off day to exercise the horses.
